Buteyko Breathing

The Buteyko Breathing method

Buteyko Breathing is a method of breathing education that focuses on breathing slower and breathing lighter for health benefits. You might have heard the phrase “the mouth is for eating, the nose is for breathing.” We reinforce this principle, that the nose should always be used for breathing.

When you learn how to breathe slowly, and calmly through the nose;

You are -

  • Cleaning the air before it enters the lungs
  • Moisturizing the air
  • Keeping your brain calm, not in fight or flight
  • Making sure more oxygen is dispersed to the tissues
  • Managing asthma symptoms
  • Managing allergies
  • Improving sleep quality
  • Supporting dental and facial growth
  • Improving overall body health and wellness

HOW CAN BUTEYKO BREATHING HELP MY ASTHMA?

Asthma is a condition in which the airways in the lungs can become inflamed and narrow. This can make it feel difficult to breathe, and or catch a full breath. We call this feeling “air hunger.” The symptoms of asthma alone can exacerbate the cause of asthma; causing the individual to over breathe to compensate to try to get more oxygen.

The body’s way of compensating by over-breathing becomes a cycle, and symptoms can be unmanageable at times.

We teach our patients how to breathe slower, calmer, and to manage the onset of asthma before it starts.
